Person Of Interest: Random Blog Post 2
Even though I know I have no extra time and can barely finish my schoolwork as it is, I decided to start a new show on Netflix this weekend called Person Of Interest. This show isn’t necessarily new, as it is currently on season 4, but I just discovered it and I’ve already watched more episodes than I’d like to admit. Person Of Interest is about a computer genius, Finch, and a former CIA agent, John, who work together to stop crimes through the creation of their Artificial Intelligence system, which uses all cameras and microphones in the country to watch citizens and detect acts of crime before they happen. Personally, I love shows filled with action and suspense, which is why I’ve already finished all seasons of Criminal Minds and Law & Order. However, immediately I realized this show was different because it incorporates the real-life problem of privacy security today.
I have never been a person thats paranoid of being watched by the government because it’s not something that crosses my mind that often, and it’s not like I have anything to hide. Honestly, whos going to bother to surveil an average college student? I feel too irrelevant and boring to be of anyone’s interest. However, after the Facebook privacy scandal, I’ve started to realize just how much information I put on the web, and it started to worry me. All of a sudden, I started to realize that the ads that would pop up on my phone were things I had just talked about with my friends. It made me think, is my phone listening to me? Or is my phone just using my web history to target my interests?
Another interesting thing that I have recently realized is that if you take time to look around at your classmates computers, a majority of them have tape over the camera. At first I laughed, but then I decided that it's not crazy, especially with all the recent security scandals. In conclusion, Person Of Interest hasn’t necessarily made me paranoid about the surveillance of our citizens, but it has made me more aware. However, I still don't think I’ll take the time to cover my cameras.
I will definitely need to try this show out! Is it a Netflix original? Netflix has some great content. I also love Criminal Minds and Law & Order but I will be interested to try this with the issue of privacy. I am also really bad at starting shows during the school year hahaha. I have also noticed ads popping up regarding things I'm talking about with friends + family! Crazy!
ReplyDeleteI've heard such good things about this show! I started watching it I think over the last break but once school started again definitely lost track. I have always been one of those people who was all too aware of what I put on the internet and how technology has made surveillance so incredibly simple. I grew up always being extra cautious especially depending on where I was. I would always do my best to be very picky with the wifi networks I chose to access and with what I was opening up on public networks, especially email accounts, and I absolutely refuse to do online banking or sensitive things like that on public networks at all costs. I am also taking a cybersecurity course this semester (ITP 125, 2 units, a really good class) that has made me more aware of the ways people could maliciously use the data you put on the internet, so that definitely doesn't help my over awareness but I like to say better safe than sorry. Back to the show though, this post reminded me that it existed and how much I liked it so I'll definitely have to get back to it soon!
ReplyDeleteI've always had the same mindset you have of not being paranoid about being watched since as you said, who cares about an average college student. But I definitely also agree that I've started to think about it and it definitely makes you think about what you're putting out on the internet.

I agree with you about covering my camera. I know Mark Zuckerberg does it but I assume he has a lot more to hide than I do.

This is very true that our pones are listening to us. It is creepy and scary. The phone also listens to you in other languages. I realized when I talk to friends or my sister in Farsi, I see random ads about the products that we were talking about.
